From the Head

Welcome to the Department of Medieval Studies at the Central European University!

Our Department has a distinguished record in both teaching and research. To date, we have awarded more than 400 MA and 85 PhD degrees and have hosted visiting students from four continents through the ERASMUS and other exchange programs. Our twenty dedicated faculty members provide students in the department with an innovative and engaging curriculum. Our courses and thesis supervision incorporate many aspects of the material and spiritual world from Late Antiquity to the Early Modern period covering the whole of Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean.

As one of the most active research departments within CEU, our faculty members and students are involved in a dozen research projects at the moment. We are fortunate to have a friendly and engaged office staff to support our academic programs and research. Budapest is an attractive city in which to live and work, providing another kind of rewarding experience for our graduate students from many parts of the world. We welcome all enquiries from prospective students with an interest in our activities.

I hope to meet many of you in the future as students or as colleagues,

Daniel Ziemann
Associate Professor, Head of Department
